Why You Should Walk Barefoot in the Grass
As I reflect on all the opportunities afforded us during the Summer months, I’m excited. I’m transported back to my youth when I’d travel to my grandfather’s house for weeks during the Summer to spend time with him and my cousins. We called the single street community, “the Country.” The Country’s pace was slower and safer than the city so we got to make up our own rules. One thing I enjoyed tremendously was walking barefoot. There was something about feeling the blades of grass brush against my bare feet. That feeling paired with the smell of the outdoors, the sounds of the birds, the ducks, the pigs, and other animals helped me relax and enjoy the moment. I want the same for you.
In the next day or so, take time to walk through the grass barefoot. Using four of your five senses, describe the experience.
For Couples: I think of Ed Sheeran’s song, Perfect, and the line in the song,
“Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song…”
In the next day or so, play your special song, and take your partner for a dance outside barefoot. During the song, enjoy your partner using all of your senses. After a couple of songs or more, discuss the sensations of dancing barefoot in the grass using four of your five senses.
Be present in Your Life
In our fast-paced lives, it is easy to live on autopilot. Switch off the autopilot and exercise mindfulness in your life. To do this, begin by tuning into your senses as you eat, as you work, as you cook dinner, as you talk with your kids, and any other experience you have. With practice, you can train yourself to be in the moment you’re in and to fully savor it. You’ll learn more about yourself and those you engage with making deeper connections.
